November Reset Ideas for a Calm and Cozy Holiday Season

November is a month of beginnings and ends.

It’s the start of the end of the year.

It’s the end of autumn.

It’s the onset of winter.

It’s the beginning of the holidays.

And traditionally, it’s a time of gratitude and reflection.

Which, in my opinion, makes it the perfect time to reset, prepare, and recharge.

So, that’s what this post is for.

It’s a list of ideas to help you restart and be ready for a calm and cozy Christmas. It’s a chance to try something different (or to just try something again—that’s okay too) and see if you can create a holiday season that’s a blessing instead of a burden.

But remember, this is not a to-do list. I’m NOT saying to do all of these (Or that you need to).

Just imagine this list is a menu. Pick a few categories and pick a few things that apply to you and focus on those.

Because, seriously, it’s okay to not keep up with the Jones.’ (They’re probably just faking it anyway).

This reset is for you to create a cozy, calm, and meaningful Christmas. So, let’s find what works for your life.

Home Exterior Reset Ideas for November

We’ll go ahead and start with ideas for resetting the great outdoors. This first part focuses on the direct exterior of the house, and the next part focuses on the yard and garden.

Don’t feel like you have to do anything on here besides what your home may need for safety purposes (e.g. trimming necessary branches so they don’t fall through the roof).

Because even though it’s nice to have a home that looks good walking up to it (and it feels good to have things all winterized and ready for the season), it’s not strictly neccessary.

And sometimes, we just don’t get to it all. And that’s okay.

But anyways, here are some ideas for resetting the front of your house:

  • Clean out and repair the gutters
  • Trim branches that are getting too close to the roof
  • Change out worn weather stripping and switch out your door sweeps
  • Clean off the porch
  • Re-paint the front door (if your climate allows it)
  • Replace your house numbers
  • Clean out and organize the shed
  • Clean and put away (or cover) patio furniture
  • Declutter and clear the garage
  • Set up a “Winter station” for snow gear
  • Switch out any burnt-out lightbulbs
  • Put up Christmas lights

Yard and Garden Fall Reset Ideas

And now we’re on to the yard! I made this separate from the house exterior because there are enough ideas I felt like it warranted its own category.

If I had to pick the most important here, I would probably go with draining the hoses and raking the leaves.

  • Put away summer kid’s toys in the yard
  • Rake all the leaves
  • Put out a bird feeder for the winter months (make sure you’re consistent)
  • Plant any bulbs that you want for spring
  • Clean and fix your pavers
  • Clean out and store pots and urns
  • Clear out old garden plants and spent perennials
  • Drain garden hoses and store them for the winter
  • Turn off outdoor faucets (No leaks!)
  • Burn or haul away brush piles
  • Pull any remaining weeds
  • Put out mulch (Bonus points if you use your leaves!)
  • Edge the lawn before things freeze
  • Put out seasonal banners or inflatibles

Home Interior Reset Checklist for Fall

Once you’ve finished the exterior, it’s time to go on the the interior.

This area can be REALLY overwhelming at the holidays, so I recommend picking habits over tasks (though you can choose one or two tasks if you want).

Habits tend to keep things cleaner longer, though.

(And if you’re so overwhelmed that you need a place to start, check out my post on how to clean your house in a day when it’s a disgusting mess.)

If I were picking for me, I would probably choose something like the 15-minute tidy and then giving each item a home (because we moved and I need to re-do homes for things).

  • Declutter for 10 minutes a day
  • Deep clean your main areas
  • Clean out the pantry
  • Prepare guest bedrooms
  • Change out your decor (if needed)
  • Clean the baseboards and walls
  • Swap out seasonal clothes
  • Vacuum under all the furniture
  • Dust the ceiling fans and vents
  • Run cleaning cycles on the dishwasher and washing machine
  • Clean out your car
  • Tidy up your cleaning supplies
  • Make sure all your stuff has a home
  • Wash the curtains and rugs
  • Do a “one in, one out” rule for November
  • Solidify one cleaning routine (Dishes, floors, bathrooms, etc.)
  • Do a 15-minute tidy each night before winding down

Exercise and Wellness Reset Suggestions

Most people recognize that they need better health goals. In fact, almost 50% of people in the US made goals about exercising in 2025, but history shows that less than 10% stick with their goals for a year.

I think the key is to do small, and manageable goals for you.

If you’re not exercising at all, try doing 5 minutes a day.

If you’re already exercising rigorously, try improving your nutrition incrementally or drinking water more consistently.

Usually small pieces of progress are better than big ideals because you stick with them longer.

So here are some November health reset ideas you can pull from and tailor to your needs:

  • Drink water on a schedule
  • If your busy, exercise for 5 minutes a day (Bailey Brown has a playlist for this)
  • Cut refined sugar for the month
  • Try a new sport
  • Try a workout program (I’m planning to do one from Glowbody PT)
  • Eat greens with every meal
  • Go for a walk every day (or for 3 days a week)
  • Try a class at the gym
  • Begin a morning stretch routine
  • Get good vitamins (if you don’t take any)
  • Do YouTube workout videos 4 times a week
  • Try a step goal
  • Book overdue check-ups
  • Try 4 new, healthy recipes this month
  • Follow a consistent sleep schedule

November Reset Ideas for Holiday Preparation

Holiday preparation is vital to November, and we can’t get around doing some of it.

But, I’m honestly amazed by how much we do that doesn’t have to be done.

That’s why some of the points on this list have to do with filtering out that noise, and the rest focus mainly on meaningful or extra-helpful tasks.

  • Set a budget or spending cap for the holidays
  • Keep a list of everyone you need gifts for
  • Rethink obligations and discard those that aren’t necessary
  • Make a gift (or two) by hand
  • Think of someone to serve and makes plans to do it
  • Set 3 main goals for the holidays (Yes, just three)
  • Check the timing of sales for local stores
  • Plan deliberate, slow activities for the Christmas season
  • Set dates for get-togethers
  • Take photos for Christmas cards
  • Design or find a Christmas countdown IF it’s really important to you (This one is re-usable and affordable)
  • Discuss your traditions and pare down
  • Plan and book travel
  • Delegate responsibilities to share necessary work
  • Choose a charity to donate to or volunteer with

Fall Financial Reset Ideas

Like I said above, November marks the start of the end of the year. If anything, it should probably be when we look at our finances and figure out how to finish strong and begin again on the right foot.

But, all too often, budgeting and monetary to-do lists get shoved under the rug for the holidays.

And of course, money isn’t everything, but it’s still smart to include being financially savvy in our plans.

At least do it in one or two ways that feel manageable (some is better than none).

  • Check your recurring expenses and pare down
  • Write down everything you spent last month (if you’re new to this)
  • Update or create budget categories
  • Start ot update a budget spreadsheet
  • Check your credit report
  • Pay off a debt (or make a big payment—whatever is big for you)
  • Put all your bills on autopay
  • Gather up your tax documents
  • Go through old financial paperwork and shred what you don’t need
  • Set three money goals for the next year
  • Spend only in cash for the month
  • Review retirement contributions

Personal and Self-Care Reset Ideas for November

Before the craziness of the holidays kick in (or to help prevent the craziness from kicking in), it’s a good idea to also take some time for self-care.

I’m not saying you should be selfish, but I am saying to take care for your body and mind so they can serve you well in the weeks and months to come.

I really love a lot of these, so good luck choosing your favorites. (Sorry to make it hard!)

  • Do a complete brain dump
  • Write down something you’re grateful for every day
  • Get a hair cut
  • Moisturize and get good lotion and lip balm
  • Trim and paint your nails for Thanksgiving
  • Take 5 minutes to breathe and think of nothing each morning
  • Stargaze every night (when it’s clear)
  • Get a new toothbrush (It’s easy to forget)
  • Write down what went well this year and what didn’t
  • Get rid of clothes that don’t make you feel good
  • Make a vision board
  • Listen to uplifting music
  • Do something that makes you feel put together
  • Work to change a negative thought pattern
  • Start a deliberate winding-down routine

Digital Reset Ideas

We’ve spent a lot of time on physical items and clutter, but what about digital clutter? We might not notice it, but it’s totally there.

Plus, technology tends to clutter up our time too, so doing some screen detoxing may be a good idea as well.

If I had to pick one of these points, I’d probably try and keep my phone in low power mode during work/family hours, though it’d be hard.

(Putting it in low power mode limits the apps you can use and, for me personally, makes it easier to stay off your phone).

But anyway, here we are:

  • Clear your phone of old reminders or alarms
  • Put important dates for the coming year into your calendar
  • Delete old downloads
  • Go through all your photos
  • Organize your apps and delete ones you don’t use
  • Set app timers and goals for screen usage
  • Delete 50 old emails a day
  • Put all the important birthdays in your calendar
  • Unsubscribe from 15 email senders
  • Keep your phone in low-power mode during productivity hours
  • Clean out old files on your computer
  • Try to get to inbox zero
  • Update software
  • Get anti-virus for all your devices
  • Delete apps or socials that don’t make you a better person
  • Integrate a sceen free hour or time
  • Update emergency contacts and lock screen information
  • Delete old contacts and chats

Spiritual Fall Reset Suggestions

I wanted to have this on here because November and December are generally recognized as spiritual months.

And you don’t have to do these, because your beliefs may be different from mine, and that’s okay!

However, for those who feel interested, I invite you to try and get closer to God during this time, because I believe He is there waiting to help and bless us.

Here are some ways to connect with him:

  • Read scriptures every day for 15 minutes
  • Download a “verse a day” app
  • Listen to worship music every morning
  • Memorize a verse or poem a week
  • Go to church every Sunday
  • Pray before you go to bed each night
  • Listen to one church talk/podcast every day
  • Ask God for guidance every day (and listen for it)
  • Write each night about God’s hand in your life
  • Pray before every meal
  • Write down what you know about God
  • Pray for others
  • Keep a miracles list
  • Read an additional church/spiritual book
  • Honor the sabbath as day of rest

Social Reset Ideas for November

Finally, after all the time we’ve spent talking about your house and your habits, it’s time to refocus outward.

Because connection is important. And though we lose track of friendships and community, we need them.

Which is why this reset section exists.

Find a way to look outward that works for you. You may not be social, so saying hi to someone new might be a big deal. Or, you could be very social, but you might need to work on forgiving someone who’s wronged you.

Whatever your circumstances, though, you may be surprised by how looking outward for better connection helps fill gaps in your life.

So, here’s the list of fall social reset ideas:

  • Text a friend you haven’t heard from
  • Do a Friendsgiving
  • Forgive someone
  • Send thank you messages to people you appreciate
  • Schedule a park or lunch meet-up
  • Take time to go on dates (especially if you’re married)
  • Sit by someone new at work, school, or church
  • Take someone flowers
  • Call a grandparent or relative
  • Plan one-on-one time with kids
  • Pray for people by name
  • Help a friend with a chore
  • Say hi to someone you don’t know
  • Visit someone you haven’t seen in a while

Let Your November Reset Refresh You (And Not Exhaust You)

That was a big range of ideas, and I’m proud of you for looking through it and thinking about how you can reset this year!

Remember though, that slow and steady wins the race.

These are suggestions, and it’s best to just pick a few and let the rest be. If you build a really good habit around some you may be able to add more next year (though maybe not . . . and that’s okay).

Just keep moving forward and trying again each day. You’ve got this!

Oh, and merry early Christmas!
